When Traditional Tracking Falls Short

Three fleet scenarios where GPS trackers aren’t an option.

Modern fleets increasingly consist of vehicles that can’t be retrofitted – or where the effort simply isn’t worth it. Here are three common examples:

  • Leased Vehicles
Contracts often prohibit structural modifications. Installing GPS trackers anyway can lead to chargebacks upon return or even void warranties. In practice, fleet managers end up tracking only owned vehicles – losing visibility over the rest of the fleet.

  • Electric Vehicles
Any intervention in the vehicle’s electrical system must be carried out by certified workshops. Appointments are limited, installation effort is high, and even then, key EV data is often missing – such as battery charge level and remaining range.

  • Mixed Fleets
Managing vehicles from different manufacturers like Mercedes, VW, and Ford means juggling multiple manufacturer portals alongside your own dispatch system. Data formats don’t align, logins are scattered, and a complete fleet overview is nearly impossible.

Your vehicles are already sending data. No one has been using it.

Since April 2018, all newly registered cars and light commercial vehicles in the EU are required to have an active cellular connection. What started as an emergency system has evolved into a continuous data stream: location, mileage, fuel level, battery charge, and maintenance data are transmitted daily from the vehicle to the manufacturer.

For construction and agricultural machinery, the ISO 15143-3 interface provides comparable data from manufacturers like John Deere, Caterpillar, and Liebherr.

This data already exists. What’s been missing is a platform that makes it usable for fleet management.

That’s exactly what geoCapture does. Using official manufacturer APIs, your vehicle data flows into your dispatch system in real time – without any hardware installation.

Three things you no longer need

Manage your fleet without buying hardware,
without workshop visits, and without modifying your vehicles.

No workshop downtime per vehicle

Activate instead of install. Setup takes minutes per vehicle, not half a day in the workshop. Your drivers stay on the road.

No workshop day per vehicle

Activate instead of install. Calculate in minutes per vehicle, not half a workshop day. Your drivers stay on the road.

No risk for leasing or warranties

No installation, no wiring, no modifications. Nothing to explain when returning leased vehicles – and no impact on warranties.

More than just location

What your vehicle already knows

Modern vehicles continuously collect data such as location, mileage, fuel level, battery charge, and maintenance needs. With geoCapture, this data flows directly into your dispatch system, driver logs, and maintenance planning.

Three vehicle types, one platform

Whether cars, construction equipment, or trucks: the data source defines the integration.

Using official manufacturer APIs, geoCapture connects directly to the built-in telematics of leading car and van brands. Location, mileage, fuel level, and battery charge are transferred to your dispatch system – no installation required.

The cross-manufacturer ISO 15143-3 interface provides location and telematics data from brands like John Deere, Caterpillar, and Liebherr directly in geoCapture – without additional hardware.

More about the ISO 15143-3 interface

The Remote FMS interface of modern trucks delivers position, driving times, fuel consumption, and maintenance data – without any additional hardware. This brings cars, construction equipment, and trucks together in one unified platform.

Compatible brands

These manufacturers are already integrated

Through the connected car platform CARUSO and direct manufacturer APIs, geoCapture connects to the leading brands in the passenger car and commercial vehicle market.

Especially relevant for electric fleets

Monitor range and battery charge, without touching the vehicle.

Installing GPS trackers in electric vehicles is particularly complex. Any work on the vehicle’s electrical system must be carried out by certified workshops, appointments are limited, and improper installation can void warranties. Even then, the most critical EV data is often missing: current battery charge and remaining range.

geoCapture takes a different approach by using the telematics already provided by the manufacturer. You can monitor battery charge in real time, plan routes based on actual range, and identify maintenance needs early—without workshop visits, without modifications, and without warranty risks.

Real-world example:
A service company with twelve electric vans can instantly see which vehicles start the day fully charged and which require a charging stop. Routes are no longer based on estimates, but on the actual battery level of each vehicle. Charging stops can be planned along the route, before the driver even needs to think about them.

GDPR-compliant

Your vehicle data stays yours.

geoCapture uses the manufacturers’ official consent processes and ensures GDPR-compliant transmission of your vehicle and location data. You retain full control over what data is collected and how long it is stored. Access to individual vehicles can be revoked at any time.

Start without hardware. Start instantly.

We review your fleet and show you which vehicles you can start tracking tomorrow, no installation required.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tracking without Hardware

  • How does vehicle tracking without hardware work?

Modern cars, vans, and trucks already transmit telematics data from the factory. Information such as location, mileage, fuel level, and battery charge is sent daily from the vehicle to the manufacturer’s cloud. geoCapture connects to this cloud, retrieves your vehicle data, and brings it together in one interface. You get the same visibility as with traditional GPS tracking, without installing anything in the vehicle. For construction equipment, the same process works via the ISO 15143-3 interface; for trucks via the Remote FMS interface.

  • Which manufacturers and models are supported?

Currently, geoCapture integrates with VW Group, BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz Group, Ford Motor Company, Renault Group, and Stellantis. This covers the majority of vehicles in the European passenger car and commercial vehicle market. Available data points depend on the manufacturer, model year, and sometimes the vehicle configuration. As part of our free consultation, we review this based on your specific fleet. Additional brands are continuously being added.

  • Does this also work with leased vehicles?

Yes, leased vehicles are a typical use case. Since no hardware is installed, wired, or attached, there are no conflicts with leasing contracts, no warranty issues, and no chargebacks upon return. Activation is fully digital via the manufacturer’s interface and can be revoked just as easily at the end of the lease.

  • What does tracking without hardware cost compared to GPS trackers?

The cost structure is different. With traditional tracking, you pay upfront for hardware and installation, plus ongoing connectivity and software fees. Without hardware, those upfront costs are eliminated. Instead, there is a recurring data fee per vehicle. What makes sense for your fleet depends on fleet size, contract duration, and required features. We’re happy to provide a tailored quote after a short consultation.

  • What data is transmitted?

Depending on the manufacturer and model, available data may include location and mileage for dispatch and leasing, fuel level and battery charge for route and range planning, as well as maintenance and diagnostic data for predictive servicing. During the consultation, we determine which data points are available for your specific fleet and how you can use them.

  • What about data protection?

Connected car data is subject to GDPR and is transmitted only with explicit consent. The process is standardized: as the vehicle owner, you grant access for each individual vehicle and can revoke it at any time. geoCapture processes data in German data centers in compliance with GDPR and BDSG regulations. You define retention periods and purposes yourself. A detailed overview of all data processors can be found in our privacy policy.

  • What is the difference between tracking with and without hardware?

Both approaches show you where your vehicles are and how they are used. The main difference lies in functionality: GPS trackers can enable additional active features that require direct access to the vehicle’s electronics, such as immobilization, remote control, or driver identification via key or tag. If you only need location, mileage, and telematics data, the hardware-free approach is usually faster and more cost-effective.

  • Can I combine GPS-tracked vehicles and connected vehicles in one fleet?

Yes, and that’s exactly where geoCapture adds value. Both data sources are integrated into the same interface. You can see a vehicle with a GPS tracker alongside a vehicle connected via manufacturer telematics in the same map, reports, and dispatch system. This is especially useful for mixed fleets or during a gradual transition to electric mobility.
